Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet: The Liquid Lipstick | AD

With liquid lipsticks taking over the beauty world, what better time to revisit a classic cult buy? Bourjois were ahead of the game with their Rouge Edition Velvet; a non-drying, intensely pigmented lip colour that feels as light as air to apply but has great lasting power. It's so premium in feel, but at £8.99 it's also distinctly easy on the wallet!

Rouge Edition Velvet comes in an extensive colour range, but I've picked out my three favourites for different occasions - an everyday peachy nude, a rock 'n roll cool-toned brown that looks great with sultry eyes and then a bit of a wildcard for me...hot pinky-red! I find that the matte finish on the Rouge Edition Velvet lipsticks gives very bright colours a really chic and modern twist - I wouldn't normally go for a fuchsia shade, but it's so much easier to wear when it doesn't have that hi-shine sort of finish.

Above are the three velvety liquid lipsticks I chose for my looks - clockwise from left to right, there's the punchy pink-red Fu(n)chsia, my cool-toned nude Cool Brown and then the pretty peach, Honey Mood. I love a peachy shade on my lips and I chose to really prettify this one by using a matching blush on my cheeks.

I went for an old favourite, the Little Round Pot Blusher in "Healthy Mix". It gives a lovely glow - I just apply lightly with a small powder brush. Here's my pretty daytime look, gargantuan pregnancy stomach cropped out so that I can at least have a stab at being glamorous! I love this matching lip and cheek combo - it's really fresh and young, I think.

The Rouge Edition Velvet in Honey Mood (shade 16) is incredibly easy to wear and a great option if you're bored of run-of-the-mill neutrals.

The matte finish of the Rouge Edition Velvet gives it all a very non-obvious, sophisticated sort of feel. But even more so, I think, in my "wildcard" choice:

Just look at that punchy fuchsia! It's actually very red, so more of a red with a fuchsia lean than a full-on fuchsia, and I discovered the shade entirely by happy accident when I applied it in the dark, for a dinner, thinking that it was a true red.

Other things that happened in the dark - such as putting on my top inside out and packing a toy iPhone into my handbag instead of my actual phone - weren't so much of a happy accident, but at least I found a new lipstick shade!

It's a very good "wear it with glasses" lipstick - accentuating the lips and adding a vivid dash of colour to the face - and the formula doesn't transfer or get all over your teeth, which is the prime reason I don't wear bright colours too often. Very low-maintenance, me...

Here I am sexing it up with my Cool Brown (shade 17) - a "my lips but better" shade if ever there was one. I wasn't in the mood for one of those nude shades that look like concealer, though they are very fetching with a dark and smokey eye. This cool nude looks just the right side of polished - it's a smart tone, but the velvety finish means that it's a bit worn-in, almost like a nude lipstick that's been patted off and muted down. Perfect.

I piled a load of Volume Reveal mascara on for this look (which, I suppose, is my evening look?) and and then lined my eyes with the Metallic Liner in a cocoa shade. Smouldering lady. Again, would be an entirely different story altogether if you could see the rest of me - I go outwards a bit like a cone -  but let's not shatter the illusion. Ha!

I think - and I can't believe that I'm about to say this, as a die-hard "nudist" - that mine might just be the Fu(n)chsia shade with the Parisian stripes and spectacles. Very French Exchange Student. Though I'm also a sucker for the peach. Decisions, decisions...
