The Classic Wool Coat: A January Sales Investment
I was zooming through the online - virtual - aisles at Hush, looking for an entirely different link to something, when I stumbled across the amazing Pelle coat, pictured above. I was genuinely surprised to see it there because I assumed that it would have completely sold out very early on. At the time of writing, all sizes are still available and the coat, which is heavy as a horse blanket and made from the most gorgeous wool, is reduced from £219 to £110.
The reason I assumed it would have sold out is because it's such a solid classic; the smart longline shape, the sophisticated check pattern - I've worn it more than any other coat this winter. (I was sent it to shoot for my Hush advertorial a few months ago.) Mainly over jeans and trainers, so it's not even one of those coats that you have to save for best, but it looks immensely impressive when you do a bit of power-dressing beneath it too.

And - the true style litmus test! - every time I wear the Pelle coat* I get asked where it's from. This always pleases me greatly anyway, but a few people have also assumed that it was one of those coats that requires a secured loan to be able to pay for it. And it's not.
(I very rarely spend ridiculous amounts on clothes, I hasten to add. I don't know how my friends and family have come to think of me this way... I used to spend quite ludicrous amounts, when I was newly employed (ish) and let off the familial leash, but adult life and doing up houses forced the end of that habit. Mind you, things were so much cheaper when I was in my early twenties - I remember buying a Miu Miu bag for £185! My first Mulberry was a big, heavy leather tote and I'm sure that was £450. Even that is a crazy amount when you think about it, but still miles cheaper than that would be now. Oh, those halcyon days when we moaned about a pint being £2.65 and I baulked at the thought of buying a Shoreditch two-bed flat because it was £185,000. It would probably be five times that much now. More.)
Where was I? The Pelle. It's not often you find superior quality and something so covetable - and useful - in the sales. The thing you find is usually a lime green netting mini skirt reduced from £1,342 to £280 and people buy it because it's Balenciaga. Bargain! The Pelle coat will last forever. You could captain a ship in it, you could stride across fields in it, it looks equally good over smart or casual attire and - as many of my friends have exclaimed - looks absolutely excellent with trainers. A proper investment without the usual "oh, think of this as an investment" price tag.
You can find it here* online - £110, as I said. I have a size 10 and I think it just about runs true to size, but I always buy two sizes in everything these days (10 and 12) because I never know which way things will lean and I can't be bothered to wait in twice. Let me know how you get on. Note: I'm going to hazard a guess that this coat will look slightly more streamlined the taller you are and also, the belt is the longest belt of any garment I have ever owned. I mean, you could lasso a bloody cow with it it's that long. Huge. Miles long. I have no idea why, unless you're supposed to bandage yourself up in it around the middle!
