Frequently asked questions.

WHO IS RUTH CRILLY?

God, you’re forcing me to start this off in the third person, which makes me feel like a prize idiot. Let’s see if the internet can get us a quick bio to copy and paste:

“Ruth Crilly is a British model, beauty blogger, and content creator known for her blog A Model Recommends and YouTube channel. She shares skincare, makeup, and lifestyle advice, drawing from her experience in the fashion industry.

Her unique perspective as a model makes her a trustworthy industry insider and a sought-after social media talent.

In 2024 Crilly published her first book with Bonnier, How Not to be a Supermodel.”

Not bad, AI. Not bad. (Feel free to berate me: I do have the odd dally with AI when I’m sick of writing short snippets and bios about myself! I’m really polite to the chat bot in case they take over the world. The hope is that they would spare me and use me as some sort of living museum exhibit.)

who is ruth crilly’s husband?

Ruth Crilly’s husband is portrait photographer Richard Grassie. You can find his website here if you’d like to take a look at his work. Ruth’s husband does not feature in her content and the identities of her children are kept private. Most of Ruth’s friends and family think social media is complete madness and firmly decline any offers to be included.

Richard Grassie often gets press-ganged into helping create Ruth’s ambitious brand deals and ad campaigns but is more at home shooting celebrities as they are easier to work with than his wife. Ruth met Richard through work (her first modelling shoot) in 2021 and they married in 2008. They have two children, born in 2015 and 2017.

why did ruth crilly stop modelling?

Ruth’s modelling career began in 2001 and unofficially ended in 2012, when she carried out the last of her shoot commitments through her modelling agency, Models 1. In 2010 she had set up her blog, A Model Recommends, and it almost immediately became a full time pursuit.

She was also almost 32 by this point and desperate to start a family but it just wasn’t happening. Having to stay a certain way physically for her modelling career didn’t fit in with her life plans and she gradually made the decision to concentrate on her blogging and vlogging career.

is it true ruth crilly did a law degree?

She did two years of a law degree so it doesn’t count. Also she spent most of the time at uni drinking large glasses of cheap Chardonnay in the student bar so she can’t imagine that much information got through to the right part of her brain.

She left her law degree in 2001 to pursue a modelling career and then, because she was an adult and left to her own devices, she decided to study the stuff that she’d always wanted to study. She did an OU course in creative writing, first of all, and then she went on to get a 1st Class Honours degree in Literature. After that she tampered with a few post-grad courses in writing and journalism before doing an MA in Creative Writing at Royal Holloway.

WHat pets does ruth crilly have?

Ruth Crilly has a Cockapoo called Dexter and a British Shorthair cat called Mr Bear. They are both cracking on a bit, age-wise, and the day she has to update this page to remove one (or both) of them will be well grim. She tries not to think about it. She’s actually convinced that her cat will live forever, or at least until she’s aged and near-death herself. It’s inconceivable that Mr Bear will one day cease to exist.

Dexter is a cross between a working spaniel and a miniature poodle and Mr Bear is a golden-tipped cream British Shorthair. She can highly recommend both of them.

HAS RUTH CRILLY WRITTEN ANY BOOKS?

She probably hasn’t really mentioned this but in 2024 her first book was published and became an instant Sunday Times bestseller. How Not to be a Supermodel is a comic memoir where her experiences in the fashion industry in the noughties are humorously recounted. You can find it here.

WHAT IS RUTH CRILLY’S APPROACH TO SKINCARE?

Ruth concentrates on a non-invasive, product-based approach to skincare and skin health. At time of writing she has had no tweakments, injectables or plastic surgery and is keen to explore alternatives to these options that offer good results and value for money.
