Jumpers for Beverly Goldberg

abc the goldbergs

I’ve been indulging in a bit of fantasy shopping for my favourite woman-crush, Beverly Goldberg. Have you watched The Goldbergs yet? It’s fabulous – I try to catch it every morning on E4 for a bit of a feel-good fix. Loosely based on the real-life events of a real-life family called – you’ve guessed it – The Goldbergs, it stars Wendi McLendon-Covey as crazy, interfering mega-mother Beverly and Jeff Garlin (from Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, my favourite comedy TV series of all time) as the bumbling, sort-of-useless, telly-watching Dad. It’s a real nostalgic kickback for anyone who grew up in the eighties and the storylines are so wonderfully honest and true that I well up and/or cry at the end of nearly every episode.

ott knitwear eighties style

Anyway: Beverly’s wardrobe is one of the show’s definite highlights, with her speciality piece being the sort of OTT  knitwear that was all the rage in the eighties. I’m talking bejewelled, shoulder-padded, insane patterns or – often – all three. I mean, she’s just spectacular. I would look ridiculous in any sort of bejewelled, shoulder-padded knitwear at the moment because my body is shaped like a weeble, but I want to live vicariously through you all and so I’ve picked out a selection of amazing jumpers that I know Beverly Goldberg would approve of. They’re all perhaps just a little bit more refined and modern than Bev’s choices (and no shoulder pads in sight) but still very definitely make a statement! Wear with tight, stonewashed skinnies and a pair of white (or lipstick red) pointed-toe courts for the maximum eighties vibes.

We’ll start with the little H&M number above, which would need to be paired with high-waisted jeans unless you’re particularly keen on baring your navel. It’s £49.99 at H&M here.

Kate Moss wore this Coach jumper last week and it caught my eye instantly with its oversized print and vibrant colours. It’s £395 online here.

Oh, I love this pink animal-print jumper: I love it, I want it, I might even buy it so that I have it ready for my post-partum body next winter! It’s £46 from Topshop here.

An incredible, sculptural jumper from Paper London with a tiger print and an on-brand Beverly ruffle. If you’ve never been introduced to the joys of Paper‘s fine, inventive cuts then do browse their website here. The tiger sweater is here.

Bev is au fait with the batwing top and she would thoroughly approve of this sequinned version, I’m absolutely sure. It’s £60 at Topshop here – wear with black velvet ski-pants, please, just to amuse me. Those ones with the stirrups at the bottom. God I loved a stirrup…

The most Beverly, but the least affordable (and, probably, the least easily wearable) is this funky piece from Boutique Moschino. Good God. It’s just…so bright. Find it online at Net-a-Porter here. Wear shades.

Sidenote: amazing knitwear company Where’s Me Jumper will knit you absolutely anything, out of anything, completely to order. So if you spot a Beverly Goldberg number one morning and think “blimey, I could totally pull off that rhinestoned pink mohair number with lilac thunderbolts down the arms” then they are your people. Find them online here.
