If you were scrolling through Instagram this week, you may have noticed a bit of a commotion going on over some rather nice (very roomy) swag bags from brilliant clothing brand Scamp & Dude. I had always thought a swag bag was the sack that a comedy burglar carried, but apparently not: in this case it’s a large, 100% cotton bag with a zip across the top and a myriad of uses. Clutch, nappy-changing bag, in-flight seat-back organiser (keep your phone, earplugs, headphones, toiletries and cashmere socks all in one place), bathroom toiletries storer, oversized makeup bag.
Anyway, to cut a very long story short; I collaborated with Scamp & Dude to create a special edition bag, with all profits (it works out to be £11 or thereabouts) going to a charity that’s very close to my heart, the Genesis Research Trust. The trust funds research into how and why things can go wrong with conception, pregnancy and birth. This group of world-class scientists, doctors and reproductive health researchers do crucial work in the fields of infertility, miscarriage and stillbirth, investigating hormonal treatments for infertility, looking at ways of reducing chances of miscarriage, screening for fatal genes in embryos. Founded by Professor Robert Winston, who pioneered many fertility treatments and developed some incredible surgical techniques to increase chances of successful pregnancy, the trust funds research that is truly groundbreaking.
So Genesis Research Trust is my chosen charity (I was affected by miscarriage, but more profoundly, I’d say, by unexplained infertility) and the profits from my specially designed swag bag go to them. It has sold out but pre-orders open again on Monday 11th June – same for the other bags, individually designed by my friends Caroline Hirons, Sam Chapman, Sali Hughes and Ruby Hammer.
BUT WAIT: what’s this? A limited number of each swag bag has been held back for a meet and greet session this Saturday, 9th June! I’ll be at Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge, London, along with Sam Chapman, to chat, laugh and (probably) misbehave. If you missed out on a swag bag the first time around then do stop on by and say hello. We would love to see you – I feel as though I have been out of the loop for the past few years, what with babies and moving and so on, so it’s always lovely to have a chat and a catch-up.
