What’s In My Makeup Bag: Summer 2018

summer makeup sunset lover

The title of this video should really be What’s In My Makeup Bags, plural, not Bag, singular, because – at last count – I have four different versions on the go. The first one (my special edition Swag Bag with Scamp & Dude – all profits go to my chosen charity, the Genesis Research Trust) is in the bathroom and contains four newish foundation launches, eight mascaras that haven’t made the grade and about ten or eleven bronzers. (The Swag Bags are HUGE – you can find them here.)

Another of my toiletries bags has been jammed full of brushes that need cleaning, cream eyeshadows that need testing (I like to give them a few days to see if they crease in different conditions!) and a load of liquid lipsticks that all seem to be so long-lasting and pigmented I’m almost scared to use them.

Then there’s the slightly smaller bag, the bag I took away with me last week, the one that has been at least a little bit curated – that contains just one foundation (Dior Forever Mousse), one mascara (KIKO Buildable) and one lipstick (Clinique’s Beige Pop) in amongst the jumble of blushers, highlighting pens and brow gels that were inexplicably present.

But it’s the last bag that I want to talk about here; the one that gets chucked into my suitcase and taken back out again at the end of a trip, the one I’d grab if I was running to catch a flight and didn’t have time to pack. The one with the essentials du jour. There’s an amazing powderless blotting powder, a mega-glow foundation and the summer’s sexiest lipstick as well as a completely sold-out rose gold eyeshadow, brilliant brow builder (full post here) and fine, buildable powder blush.

You can find a list of all of the products below the video pane – any questions, drop me a comment below. I feel quite divided about the lipstick – Sunset Lover – it’s an absolutely gorgeous shade, but I always seem to love the idea of peachy colours more than the reality! I feel as though they sort of sap the colour from my skin and make my eyes look small. Does anyone else have this problem with brighter lipsticks? It’s probably all in my head, but I have to put it out there…

Absolute understand your comment on peach lipstick making eyes look smaller especially on fair skin. I have fair skin, neutral to warm undertone and peach does the same to me, more so if its glossy peach. The one peach that I find really worked for me is the Make up forever Artist lip blush in 300. It reads FARD A LEVRES MAT BLURRING LIP COLOR. Can’t live without it now! Let me know your thoughts

That YSL foundation looks like silk on your skin and you made me want to buy everything you used in your video – shame on you!

Hello Ruth, I am on my second Hylamide Gradual tan and LOVE IT. It changed everything. I feel ok without foundation! Thanks to you dear. Actually you’ve indroduced me to almost all my beauty routine I would say. So big thank you.
How do you compare Isle of Paradise drops to Hylamide’s?
    Thanks and kudos, great work!

Love your make up videos!! I have to agree I find the gorgeous peachy lipstick shades difficult to wear. I wasn’t sure why when I rush to buy them, I then never wear them; maybe it is because I am fair and blonde, the colour takes over my complexion.

I have the same problem with nude lipsticks, they seem to make my whole look seem “flat” so I tend to go for pinks, corals and peaches for that reason, especially in the summer, and something stronger for night time. I’ve recently purchased a matte bubblegum pink but have not been brave enough to wear it!
